Dippy Eggs

The Perfect Soft-Boiled Egg: A Simple Pleasure

There’s something wonderfully satisfying about cracking into a perfectly cooked soft-boiled - or dippy - egg. The moment your spoon breaks through the delicate white and that golden yolk begins to flow, it’s pure comfort food magic. Simple, nourishing, and elegant, soft-boiled eggs are one of those small pleasures that can elevate even the most ordinary day. Enjoying dippy eggs is a Sunday-morning ritual in our house. It is nice to have the time to enjoy the egg and soldiers on a relaxed weekend morning.

Why Soft-Boiled Eggs?

Soft-boiled eggs are the best of both worlds: the whites are set and tender, while the yolk remains rich, creamy, and just slightly runny. They’re versatile enough to serve on their own with a sprinkle of salt and pepper, or as a topping for ramen, salads, or buttery toast soldiers.

Unlike their hard-boiled cousins, soft-boiled eggs feel a little indulgent—more luxurious but no less approachable. And you need the perfect egg cup to hold your egg. We have a great selection at The Bee's Knees.

How to Cook the Perfect Soft-Boiled Egg

Cooking a soft-boiled egg isn’t complicated, but precision is key. You can see Trish & Lucinda prepare dippy eggs in our videos here. Here’s a foolproof method:

  1. Start with room-temperature eggs. This helps avoid cracking and ensures even cooking.
  2. Bring a pot of water to a gentle boil. Not a rolling boil—too vigorous and your eggs might jostle and crack.
  3. Lower the eggs in carefully. A spoon or ladle works best.
  4. Set your timer.
    • For a runnier yolk: 5 minutes.
    • For a slightly creamier but still soft yolk: 6 minutes.
  5. Cool them quickly. Transfer eggs to an ice bath right after cooking. This stops the cooking process and makes peeling easier. Keep the eggs warm in your egg cup with a cute egg cosy.

Serving Ideas

  • Toast Soldiers: A British classic—dip strips of buttered toast into the warm yolk.
  • Ramen Upgrade: Slice your soft-boiled egg in half and nestle it into a steaming bowl of noodles.
  • Salad Topper: Add protein and richness to a fresh green salad.
  • Simple Snack: A sprinkle of flaky sea salt, maybe a dash of hot sauce, and you’ve got a quick, nourishing bite.

The Beauty of Simple Cooking

Soft-boiled eggs remind us that cooking doesn’t always need to be complicated. Sometimes the most satisfying meals come from just a pot of water, an egg, and a bit of attention to timing.

Next time you want a quick breakfast, a comforting snack, or a touch of elegance on your dinner plate, try making a soft-boiled egg. It’s proof that even the humblest ingredients can deliver extraordinary joy.
